Elemental Gelade: Powerful women used as tools for men

Elemental Gelade is an anime about humans co-existing with beings called Edel Raids (They all happen to be women). These Edel Raids have the ability to react (fuse) with humans, turning into powerful weapons for the human to use. The human does not need to be a male, but most of Edel Raid users (called Pleasures) are male. whats interesting is the contract between the human and the Edel Raid. When an Edel Raid reacts with  human, she can no longer react with any other human until her current Pleasure dies. The humans on the other hand can react with as much Edel Raids as they want. They are not bound to just one Edel Raid. This is kind of like people say how women are only allowed to sleep with one man or be considered a slut if they sleep with more and men can sleep with any amount of women.

Ren can also appear behind the Pleasure in a transparent form while fused with the human. for some reason, it looks like the Edel Raids lose their clothes

Its a pretty good anime, I enjoyed it. its your basic anime story about humans controlling some powerful human-looking being and treat them as inferior to humans because they are just tools/weapons and humans really fear them.

  1. The sad thing is that this wouldn’t work the other way around. Couldn’t you imagine how this would be received in Japan if the roles were reversed? This series would be over in a few months.
Well thanks for the recommendation on a new anime series. I guess I’m going to crunchyroll to check it out.

i guess if the structure works why change it, media reuses its ideas.

  3. For some reason I believe if they changed the gender rolls it’ll be more of a comedy than a serious anime. For all that I can remember, usually if the woman is the one in command the series usually has some funny moments.

  4. Why would it be a comedy if the gender rolls changed. Thats not really right.

  5. Based on Japanese culture, what kind of show could you imagine if the gender roles were reversed. If there was a woman that was controlling a man then from what I’ve seen from other anime, the woman would be over powered, super strong, and very demanding… but of course she would be cute, skinny, and wearing a school girl uniform. All throughout the series she would be slapping the guy around and ordering him to do things.
If the guy was weak, he would be slapped around and ordered to do things.
If the guy was strong, he would try to fight back, just to be slapped around and ordered to do things.
I just can’t see them doing it any other way. If they did it the same way as in the current anime and then just changed the roles… I think it’ll be canceled very early on.

if the gender roles did change to say it would be a shittier show is not right but it would be odd. not saying women are lesser than men but just the general concept of changing something that works. for instance if you took a classic look of a evil character and the heroic character and switched their places that would be super weird show.

  7. no it wouldnt be weird show if you changed the places. what i am getting from reading your comments is that if something works then just stick with it and dont try anything new? thats kinda dumb because then everything would be boring and predictable.

  8. Then again… how many really “original” ideas are out there in the world today. It seems like we always do the same ideas over and over again… and people pay to see them… over and over again.

  9. So let me get this straight? Basically the women belong to men in the shape of a woman? That is crazy. If this is a cultural thing, I could see how it would seem appropriate. But here in America, there would be a lot of controversy surrounding the make up of this story. Here we see males dominating the female society, thus widening the stereotype gap between being equal.

If the gender roles had switched in this show it would come off extremely different. Basically we would see women possessing men. I think that is a big stereotype already put on women: that they are over protective. Also, since this is a fighting drama show it would seem out of place to see women so passionately violent.
