Maria Montessori was a physician and educator in the late 19th and early 20th century, she is best known for the Montessori method of education.  She began her career as an educator by working with children with disabilities who were thought of as “uneducatable.”  Several of her students passed reading and writing tests with above average scores and she began interested in the potential of “normal” children.  The idea behind her education method was that the classroom work should be mainly child directed while the teacher observes.  Physical activity is important for absorbing information and children should learn to be self correcting.  The Montessori method of teaching also believes that it is very important for children to directly touch what they are learning about as “the hand is intimately connected to the developing brain of children.”

Did you enjoy sitting listening to teachers as a child? And do you feel you would have learned better through a different type of schooling?
