RE: Where’s the Diversity People

Mission accomplished:

I don’t think the main issue is diversity of skin color. Although I do find it disturbing that American culture and mainstream magazines are so dominated by white models and white values; I think the real issue at hand is a lack of diversity of body types. I completely agree with knocknak in his response (http://camouflageculture.wordpress.com/2008/11/30/re-wheres-the-diversity-people/) to bickdickdaddy’s orginal post (http://camouflageculture.wordpress.com/2008/11/26/wheres-the-diversity-people/) that there is a presence of other ethnicities but these models are essentially conforming to a white idea of beauty.

But more than skin color, the problem at hand is the idea of what constitutes beautiful. The required sexualized nature of the model and the lack of representation for different body types is far more disturbing and affects everyone of all skin types, especially women. I know I’m not the one to give missions but a trickier one would be trying to find different body types portrayed on these magazines. Or magazine covers that aren’t photoshopped. And what are the ethics of photoshopping these models? How could our society change for the better if we stopped perpetuating these unachievable ideas of beauty?

word. putting a picture of someone who is flawed like millions of people will never sell as much as their perfect counterpart. i think we see beauty as whats most rare. diamonds would be worthless if there were billions everywhere. you know what i mean? but why do we judge things this way. just because its rare doesn’t mean its worth a lot. its all in advertisings scheme of things. why put actors and actresses on their covers? because thats whats hot, they are the most adapted to the media’s game. in the end advertisers just want to get money period.

It’s both our faults. On one hand, the fact that magazines don’t put people with acne on the covers makes us see perfect skin as the definition of “perfect”, but on the other hand the only reason they put their definition of “perfect” on their covers is that that’s what most people want and will buy.
